How to Compare Flights from the UAE by Total Journey Cost

Compare flights by the final door-to-door cost, total journey time and recovery options—not the headline fare alone. Add baggage, seats, airport transport, connection costs and any extra hotel night, then compare the fare rules and whether every sector is protected on one ticket.

Build a two-column flight shortlist

For each itinerary, record the operating airline, flight numbers, airports, departure and arrival times, connection length, baggage allowance, ticket conditions and final payment currency. Check whether a flight is operated by a different carrier from the one selling it, because seat selection, baggage and disruption support may follow different rules.

Add the costs the fare card omits

• Transport or parking to the UAE departure airport.
• Checked baggage in both directions, including sports or infant equipment.
• Seats together for the whole family on every sector.
• Meals, lounge access or an airport hotel during a long connection.
• Visa or transit requirements created by the routing.
• Transport from the arrival airport to the accommodation.
• One extra hotel night when the timetable arrives too early or too late.
• Foreign-currency and card charges.

Use the price shown on the airline’s final review screen, not only the price that appeared in a search engine. Avoid adding optional products you would not actually buy, but include every item necessary for your household to make the trip.

Check fare-family inclusions at the source

Airlines can include different baggage, seat, change and cancellation terms under similarly priced fares. For example, Emirates ties checked baggage to route, class and fare type, while Etihad publishes inclusions by fare family and ticket date. Treat those pages as examples of what to verify, not as a promise that every itinerary includes the same allowance.

Measure the real journey time

Start the clock when you need to leave home in the UAE and stop it when you expect to reach the accommodation. Include airport-reporting time, connections, terminal changes, passport control and the destination transfer. A six-hour “flight” can easily be an eleven-hour journey.

For overnight travel, also count usable sleep. An itinerary that saves AED 300 but leaves the family awake through two short sectors may reduce the value of the first holiday day. With young children, allow time for feeding, nappy changes, buggies and slower transfers.

Score reliability and recovery options

No schedule is guaranteed, but some bookings are easier to recover. A single ticket normally gives more protection during a missed connection than separate self-transfer tickets. More daily flights on the same route may give the airline more rebooking options. A connection with a sensible margin is usually preferable to one that depends on a perfect arrival.

Read the fare rules for voluntary changes and cancellations. Then check what happens if the airline changes the schedule. A low change fee does not necessarily mean the fare difference is small. Save the terms that applied at purchase.

Flight A is AED 3,900 for the family, includes bags and arrives at the main airport. Flight B is AED 3,250, but bags and seats add AED 620, the secondary-airport transfer adds AED 280 and the late arrival makes a hotel night useful at AED 350. The comparable totals are AED 3,900 and AED 4,500. B’s headline is lower; A’s completed journey is lower.

A repeatable booking check

1. Confirm every passenger name against the travel document.
2. Confirm airport codes, dates and local arrival day.
3. Open the baggage conditions for each sector.
4. Check transit permission for every passport in the booking.
5. Compare the final AED-equivalent total.
6. Save the confirmation, fare conditions and airline contact route.
